Slow Burn: My Journey into Warhammer - Part 1

I remember when I first saw some Warharmmer 40K miniatures on a table. I was in college at the University of Southern Mississippi in the fall of 2001. It intrigued me, but I didn't have a clue what it was. My biggest question was, "What game is on this huge table at here at the comic book shop?" The second time I 40K, Around 2006 or so, I was in the Northpark Mall in Jackson, MS, and at one time they had a gaming store in the mall. Again, another HUGE table, with a ton of models. I didn't hear a single thing or know anyone that played Warhammer and it faded from my mind. Until a few years ago when I started to frequent Now Playing, the gaming store in Tylertown, MS. The owner, Allen Smith, has THOUSANDS of models on display and it is truly a sight to behold. However, I still didn't really know what Warhammer was, because I just basically didn't bother to ask. Perhaps I should give you just a little more backstory first.

I'm a gamer. Always have been. Video games, board games, card games, you name it, I probably play it. One of may favorite things to play however is strategy games on PC. I've played all the greats. From the oldies (the Dune, Command & Conquer, Warcraft, Starcraft, Civilization series), to the new age 4X  and turn-based style of play (Homeworld, Total War, Age of Wonder, Company of Heroes, etc.). So when I got a chance to buy Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War 2 on PC in 2009, my first thoughts were, "Hey, here is a strategy game about those miniatures I saw in those stores." It was a damn fine game and it received praise from many gaming communities.

Back in 2016, Top Tier hosted a Warhammer : AoS Paint and Take event. You'd get to paint some miniatures, THEN some of the local players were going to show new people the rules. Needless to say, when I heard about this event, I was pumped since I would get a chance to learn the rules and wait...PAINT?!?!  Eh, no biggie. This will be a good time to bond with my oldest son. We can play a few rounds of Pokemon, then walk two tables back and paint! He'll love it! (He did.) The first thing I noticed were all the dice and having to use a tape measure, but the models...the models looked amazing on the table with the terrain. It was as if a strategy PC game come to life! After getting a chance to hear the rules and see the game in action, I was hooked and VERY intrigued. I wanted to play it! I wanted to win the drawing for the starter box...until the eventual winner opened his box, and I saw...sprues. Lots and lots of spures. I also saw the price tag. Hmmm, $125, plus I have to build AND paint this shiznit! Aww hell naw! Do you know how many PC games I can purchase during a sale on Steam for $125? Not to mention how many wings I could purchase at Hooters?(100+) I still have to beat Fallout 4, Witcher 3, and get back on Dragon Age: Inquisition! When would I have the time? My son and I left Top Tier that night, wanting to explore the new game and it's fantasy world (we both LOVE fantasy) but at the time I thought it was too much money and too much work. It seemed like my lil flirtation with Warhammer had ended. To stay somewhat connected, I purchased Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game for my son and I to play. We really enjoyed the theme and the co-op gameplay. AoS was still calling to me, as I noticed myself watching battle reports and painting guides on YouTube more and more each day. What was happening to me??

Ynnead's Story so far and more White Dwarf spoilers!

Are you hyped about Gathering Storm II: Fracture of Biel-Tan yet? I am! Like this electric hum is in my teeth, causing me to grind them back and forth in anticipation. I haven't just pre-ordered the books and models, which are going up for that very service this weekend, but I pre-pre-ordered them. That's totally a thing!

I'm not sold on this god yet. The rumors about the rules seem to absorb the souls of fallen elder for the benefits of those Ynnari followers that remain. Doesn't sound much like there is a rebirth to follow if your spirit gets used as fuel, yeah? It's something to think about for sure.

More scans of the February issue of White Dwarf have surfaced as well. Squint really hard, and all shall be revealed!

 

So, who else is on board for this?

The Bat-fleck signal flickers.

Today has been a flood of news about last night's revelation that Ben Affleck will no longer be directing the new solo Batman flick. In a press release statement, Affleck said:

“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions,” Affleck said in a statement. “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

I have to admit that this sounds like a step in the right direction but I'm still hesitant that the trend of dark and grim DC movies could continue with a different director. Part of the hope that I had in Affleck directing is that he would have enough creative control to steer things into a different direction. Maybe not have Batman murder so many people this time around?

Who they will find to direct the mega franchise film is anyone's guess. Variety reporter Justin Kroll did post this tweet:

Reeves is the director of the War for the Planet of the Apes film coming out this year as well as the previous film in that franchise. Personally I'd like to see the director of John Wick, Chad Stahelski, take on the Batman. Can you imagine the fight choreography with him in the director's chair?

Long time friend of Ben Affleck and movie director Kevin Smith made a tweet about the search for a director after fans mentioned his availability and recent directing of episodes of CW shows Flash and Supergirl:

I haven't always thought that Kevin Smith was the best comic book writer but there is no doubt that his heart is 100% towards making the best tv representations of comic book characters he can.

Eldar terrain scans!

The first 6 minutes of Justice League Dark!

Check out the awesomeness!

Looks like this movie will be the kind of gritty and weird atmosphere fans wanted out of it with an R rating hopefully put some fears to rest. For those who don't know, Justice League Dark focuses on those 'heroes' who dwell in the seedy underbelly of the magical world in the DC universe. I would have loved to have seen this as a live action film but I'm satisfied that Matt Ryan is voicing John Constantine in this. Why Constantine's show was canceled is beyond me and though the live action Justice League Dark still has Doug Liman signed on to direct and Guillermo Del Toro is a producer there hasn't been much forward momentum for a while.

The digital release was 1/24/2017 and the DVD/Blu-ray hits shelves on 2/7/2017.

Fresh off the presses of the Thursday Warhammer TV Twitch stream!

Whoa, info overload.

Eddie and Rob, Warhammer Twitch hosts extraordinaire,  started off in a slow reveal by covering the three Eldar groups we know of already, Craftworld Eldar (Aeldari), Dark Eldar (Drukhari), and Harlequins (Clownari?). They explained where Eldar go when they die, focusing on the Infinity Circuit inside of Craftworlds.

Then they talked about Biel-tan's Craftworld and its character. Then they talked about the boxed game Death Masque and the story behind the game, the attempt to cause Ynnead's birth. Seeing the  build up so far? Sure, it's mostly things we know from internet searching but it gets better.

Then theed talk about Gathering Storm II. The story starts in Commorragh, focusing on the Wytch Cult of Strife. They then referenced the Black Library book Valedor, which explains why the Cult of Strife is fighting a new breed of Tyranid. Yvraine, one of the new models, is a gladiator in Commorragh and gets mortally wounded in a double cross. As she lies dying, she spirit shard of Ynnead that Eldrad summoned joins with her and brings her back to life by absorbing the life force of an eldar she had just killed. This makes her the first eldar to be resurrected by Ynnead now she will serve as Ynnead's prophet.

                                            

The next info is on the Visarch: Sword of Ynnead. His armor is meant to invoke the aspects in years past and he has influence in Eldar and Dark Eldar society. He was once an aspect warrior but nothing more was revealed not putting to rest the rumor that he is/was Prince Yriel. He helps Yvraine escape Commorragh as she is attacked for her psychic abilities. They escape to Biel-tan.

Eddie then discusses the actual fracture of Biel-tan is the cracking of the infinity circuit in the Craftworld and causing the separate bits of Biel-tan to fly around as a flotilla. In the middle of this fracture appears the Yncarne: The Avatar of Ynnead. They Craftworld Eldar are hesitant towards this god as it derives its power from the souls of their dead, much like Slannesh.

It's similar appearance to Slannesh doesn't help much either, apparently. Yet at the same Eldar from all walks decide to follow Ynnead and are called the Ynnari(?). That's where we get the cool red armored picture where you see dire avengers and wytches fighting together. What else transpires they don't say but the end of Gathering Storm II ends roughly at the same time as the Fall of Cadia, with the new Ynnari helping the Imperial forces retreat.

They reveal a new formation for the Ynnari. It gets rid of fleet from Craftworld Eldar and pain tokens from Dark Eldar, and gives a new trick: when nearby Eldar units die the remaining ones gain power! It will be very interesting to see how this new army plays.

And Black Guardians are back!

Whoa, that's a lot to take in and i'll be posting more as formations and rules screen shots surface. What do you guys think about the new developments?

A small trickle of information is coming in thanks to a few fellow gamers who have the French editions of February's White Dwarf. According to 1d4Chan member CthuluIsSpy:

"So, that French white dwarf had some info that might be interesting- Aeldari are a thing
- Drukhari are also a thing. Looks like its referring to Dark Eldar
- There's something called the Exhumed who can harvest the power of soulstones to use as weapons and amplifiers. They basically call to the spirits within them to vaporise folks and to buff their psychic powers.
-There's another group called the Ynnari, who aren't really trusted because they're considered to be corrupted by demons. What's more interesting though is that the Ynnari are also considered to be already dead (deja morts).
- Seems like the Exhumed follows Ynnead, and wants the Eldar to follow suit. They want to restore Eldar society to how it was before the Fall. The problem is that they are really arrogant about it, so they tend to be treated with hostility.
- Yvaine (she's the chick, right?) can take souls and "share" them with those around her. It gets a bit hard to read, but I think it says that these souls can manifest as spectres, or she can channel them (she gets possessed, in other words). The Ynnari see this as a divine miracle. This is from the Ame Partage (Shared Souls) section on the side, in the very small print that's a pain to read."

Take that with a grain of salt of course. Everyone can name an example of disinformation or miscommunication that has come from seemingly ironclad sources. Hopefully today's Warhammer Twitch reveals will give us much more to chew on. Stay tuned!

The Punisher joins The Predator!

Confirmed Monday, Thomas Jane has joined the cast of the latest Predator movie. Though he has been in many other films I feel I'll always identify him as the title character from the 2004 film The Punisher. I was even disappointed when he didn't reprise the role in season 2 of Netflix's Daredevil.

He will join other cast members Olivia Munn, Keegan-Michael Key, Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, and Sterling K. Brown with filming expected to begin in February. The director, Shane Black, played Hawkins in the original 1987 Predator and has directed the films Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, and The Nice Guys.

Fingers crossed this will be a good movie. Anyone else looking forward to it?

Gathering Storm II news alert!

Just moments ago on today's live Twitch stream from Warhammer TV, the Games Workshop team revealed that they will be using tomorrow's Inside the Studio and Community Corner segments to discuss the new Time of Ending book Gathering Storm II: Electric Boogaloo Fracture of Biel-Tan. Their live feeds for Thursday begin at 8:00am CST and I'll be conferring any new tidbits as they reveal them.

Warhammer Quest travels abroad

The Warhammer Community site just dropped information on the next chapter in the Warhammer Quest game series: Shadows over Hammerhal!

"Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower was one of the highlights of last year’s Warhammer Age of Sigmar releases (and that’s saying a lot, because there were some great ones). The return of the classic format, but set in the Mortal Realms, was an instant hit, and we’ve been bombarded ever since with questions about a follow on game.
Well, today we’re delighted to reveal that one is on the way.
Warhammer Quest Shadows over Hammerhal will be an entirely self contained game with a whole new cast of heroes and villains.
We’re very excited about this for all sorts of reasons. The game will obviously see new quests and challenges for gamers, but perhaps just as excitingly, this set will have an even more involved narrative, and will explore the dark labyrinths beneath one of Sigmar’s new Free Cities: Hammerhal, the twin-tailed city – a metropolis that is built around a Realmgate and sprawls across two realms!
This new set is a little ways off yet, but we were super excited, and we just wanted to share it with you."

I'm looking forward to seeing how this further develops the gameplay options of Warhammer Quest. How about you?

Green Lantern Corps. movie news!

Flying under everyone's radar was the announcement from Warner Bros. last week was that a Green Lantern Corps. movie is in the works. David Goyer, writer of Batman Beings and then Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, is set to script the new film. It is being described by several outlets as a 'Lethal Weapon in Space' so that could potentially mean a film with both Hal Jordan AND Jon Stewart, which would be epic but the recent string of movies coming from DC and the WB have been rather lackluster in my opinion. According to TheWrap.com:

'"Tom Cruise, Joel McHale, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds,Armie Hammer, and Jake Gyllenhall are on the shortlist of actors DC Entertainment is considering pursuing for the role of Hal Jordan in “Green Lantern Corps”'

 I have many hopes for this movie and potential franchise as I have always been a GL fan. Hopefully it wont be dark and depressing like the current trend in the DCMU, but more of the buddy space cop explode-a-thon the concept warrants. It should stay in space and the suits should definitely not be animated.

Ynnead returns! Gathering Storm II reveals

Yesterday, the Warhammer Community page dropped the video that they hinted at Saturday:

This is huge news for the 40k End Times Time of Ending. The appearance of the Eldar god of the dead was first hinted at in the Death Masque boxed set back in August 2016. The story around the box was that Eldrad was attempting to awaken Ynnead ahead of schedule to help counter the coming darkness but because there were Space Marines in the box, Deathwatch actually, there was zero chance of that coming to pass because that would have moved the plot forward and back in those days that couldn't happen. It's crazy that in just a few short months Cadia has been destroyed, Fenris has been wiped of life, Magnus is back, and now another Eldar god appears. The subtitle Fracture of Biel-Tan doesn't bode well for the most Aspect Warrior-y of all Craftworlds but it is definitely an exciting time for 40k fans in the lead up to 8th edition this summer. When will the long rumored loyalist primarch appear? When will Cegorach walk on stage? Will the Golden Throne finally fail?

The new Logan trailer and high expectations

First, this:

Back? Cool. Though this trailer isn't as emotionally impactful as the first one, mostly thanks to The Man in Black singing a NIN song, it shows off what most Wolverine fans want out of a Wolverine movie: Wolverine running around killing people with extreme prejudice, using the foot long Ginsu knives that are his trademark. What's more, this movie apparently has TWO Wolverines running around killing people with extreme prejudice, using the foot long Ginsu knives that are their trademarks.

I have a love, disappointment, hate relationship with the all the X-Films (I'm not lumping Deadpool into it) and the Wolverine movies encapsulate all the problems I have with them. Wolverine: Origins had moments of pure character fan service that I absolutely loved but was bludgeoned to death by absolutely shitty story writing and the unmentionable last 15 or so minutes. Unbreakable metal can punch through unbreakable metal has as much logic as if I were to throw a brick through a brick wall because they shared the same physical structure.

And then there is the Ryan Reynolds laser freak:

The Wolverine was a significantly better movie. In fact, for my two cents, it was damn near perfect except for the last 15 minutes or so where the whole thing falls apart again. Really, really hot adamantium can cut through regular adamantium......because. It's like 20th Century Fox can't get over the fact that Logan has a metal skeleton and has to figure out some new way to make sure he's vulnerable. Who knows. In a movie where you see Wolverine vs. Ninja, it was the only downside.

I'll have to be real a moment, 'Logan' has an older, grizzled, defeated protagonist in the near future that we all want to see but he isn't going to have the same problems as Old Man Logan did in the spectacular story arc featured in Wolverine #66-72 and Wolverine: Giant Sized Old Man Logan. Movie studios and intellectual property rights will keep The Hulk, Hawkeye, and the Spider Buggy, from ever appearing on film together. The defining moment that causes Logan to step away from the world in Old Man Logan, while amazing and would be a dream come true to see in a movie, just isn't feasible because too much joy in the world can not be tolerated. And it has to be saved up for every single moment Tom Holland plays Spider-man.

Despite all that, I do have high hopes for 'Logan'. It has all the right concepts, and the right rating, to make a Wolverine movie that deserves to be the curtain call for Hugh Jackman as the man who is The Best at What He Does. Time will tell if we will be satisfied by the film or crushed by it.

Anyone want to make bets on what sort of adamantium shenanigans will happen in the 3rd act?

 

 

 

 

 

History of Oregon Trail: The Game

Over the weekend, I caught a rather nasty stomach bug and as I lay miserable in bed, atop a trash bag for safety sake, my thoughts turned to that classic phrase:

Now, I know as well as anyone that inspiration can strike in the strangest of places and this was no exception. I decided, were I to survive, that I would write up a small history of the great game of westward expansion known as Oregon Trail! It was a staple game for kids in the 80's, not only because it was educational and seemingly every public school provided access to it, but also because computer games were still in their infancy and any game one could get their hands on was better than no game at all. Trust me, there were only so many times you could play Pac-man and Galaga, or that god-awful Spider-man game on Atari.

I would be remiss if I didn't cover the history behind the actual Oregon Trail, seeing as I'm a history major and all, so without further ado here's a little bit of knowledge for ya:

The Oregon Trail was a wagon-wheel trail used by migrants heading out from Missouri Territory west towards Oregon Territory. The length of the trail was some 2,170 miles and spawned several other trails heading towards modern day Utah, Montana, and California. It began as a fur-trapper trail around 1811, expanded into a wagon trail in 1836, and was the main highway for over 400,000 settlers into the west. While there is no way of knowing for sure, it is estimated that between 9,500 and 21,000 people died on the Oregon Trail, as many as 12,000 from disease alone. Because of the Oregon Trail, westward expansion towards the Pacific Ocean swelled in the 1800's, laying the ground for several mid-western and west coast states and was an icon of the Wild West.

Of course, without said historical landmark the video game of the same name would not exist. The game was originally conceived in 1971 by Don Rawitsh, who created the game while he was an 8th grade history teacher in Minnesota. With the help of two friends, Paul Dillenberger and Bill Heinemann, Rawitsh wrote the program on one of the original forms of BASIC and presented the game to his class on December 3, 1971. It was an instant hit and he made it accessible to everyone on the state's public school time-share service for other teachers and students to use.

In 1974, Rawitsh was hired by the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium (MECC), where he rebuilt the game and added choice based events similar to actual historical narratives from those pioneers who traveled along the real Oregon Trail. The newer version of Oregon Trail was uploaded back on to the servers and became one of MECC's most popular programs. Several editions would follow, there are 15 in all, with the latest version being released in 2012 for Windows smart phones.

I really dug this game when I was little, and apparently so did millions of others since it has become part of our popular culture lore. I would often get out of regular class with a pass to the library to play Oregon Trail on the computers we had. You could travel along the trail, buy supplies, ford rivers, hunt for mean in a sometimes difficult mini game, and also die. A lot. I don't have many recollections of successful arrival to the Oregon territory. Most of my memories of Oregon Trail involve dying of dysentery, Indian attacks, and plain ol' starvation because shooting animals in the mini game seemed more luck based than skill. All in all, it was still something from my childhood I cherish greatly. If you want to play the game again and remember the days of yore, you can click here for the 1990's DOS version.

Eldar name change and more!

There are a few newsworthy items related to my favorite Warhammer 40k race this week. The first completely passed me by when it was dropped in the Warhammer TV video about Gathering Storm II

Did you notice it the first time? Apparently the Eldar will now be referred to as the Aeldari in upcoming books, much like when the Imperial Guard were relabeled the Astra Militarum so GW could secure those sweet, sweet IP rights on anything else they do in the future.

To confirm this, Robbie MacNiven, Black Library author and guy who should be in the know, posted this on tumblr:

 

 

Thankfully, this won't be an absolute retcon of the Eldar name, just an imperial designation for the race of Craftworld Eldar (or some other rational, pick your poison). The Dark Eldar have yet to have their new name revealed, though we have been assured it won't be Dark Aeldari.

On other Eldar related news, the rumors about the Eldar Triumvirate box seem to be all but confirmed, as Warhammer TV's painter Duncan gave out a pretty decent indication of the impending release on his 100th painting tutorial, by adding some color to an Eldar Gyrinx:

Presumeably the Gyrinx is a companion to an Eldar/Aeldari figure of some kind, but only time will tell. Rumors that are making the rounds that it could either be an Eldar/Dark Eldar/Exodite box or one goes so far as to say that the box will specifically contain Eldrad/Asurmen/Vect. Personally neither option excites me overmuch, I've never been interested in the Exodites as I think the Amish Eldar aren't particularly worthy of a codex and the three-named box contains two models I already have and one I would never play with.

Spirit of Rebellion teasers

One of the hottest games currently out there is Fantasy Flight Game's collectible dice/card game Star Wars Destiny. Already sold out the day of its release, the game has been on fire in nerdy circles around the globe as we all ravenously tear into the trickling resupplies of boosters and starters. As if people weren't already chomping at the bit for the game, yesterday FFG posted an article on the upcoming first expansion entitled Spirit of Rebellion.

The teaser images reveal Emperor Palpatine as a playable character and man is he a beast when it comes to damage output and health.



         

         I will own this card, I have foreseen it!              

Jyn Erso, Chirrut Imwe, Director Krennic, and a Death Trooper have also been revealed, along with a few events and supports such as Force Lightening. I am looking forward to seeing more reveals from this set. Perhaps I'll even get to play Obi-Wan one of these days!

           

Jyn Erso will work great with Han Solo and his Ambush ability. She'll also make Never Tell Me The Odds a card to use, since it will cost 2 resources instead of 3.

Villains are getting their fair share of tools as well. These two character cards will make an amazing combo:

The Begining of the End? *spoilers*

Major events have rocked the Warhammer 40k universe this week. If you wish to remain unspoiled, give up a benediction to the Emperor and read no further.



Ok, here's the gist....Cadia is gone!

That's right, Imperial bastion world extraordinaire and closest important world to my Stygies VIII Skitarii force, is no more. It has ceased to be. The 13th Black Crusade claims its first victim and it is a doozy. Part of the impact of Games Workshop blowing up Cadia is that we have no idea what this means for the galaxy at large. Will the Eye of Terror begin to grow larger now that the ancient Pylons of Cadia are gone? Where will Abbadon and the armies of Chaos strike next? Is the fluff world I built my Skitarii around about to be razed to the ground? What does this even mean for the line of Imperial Guard models, who have long had Cadian troops as the staple infantry model?

Without a homeworld the Cadians are essentially doomed to a slow death just like the Tanith First & Only. And what of the legendary warrior Lord Castellan Ursarkar E. Creed? Well, according to Goonbandito on the Faeit 212 boards:
     
           Creed stands alone on the ruined surface of Cadia. He sees a metal giant in a scaled
           cloak in front of him, hand outstretched. "Ursurkar E. Creed - This is not your end. Eternity
           Awaits..."

*cue mysterious sting music*

          Rumors are also surfacing about a second "Triumvirate" box focused on Eldar, similar to
          the Imperial Triumvirate that brought us Bellisarius Cawl, Saint Celestine, and Inquisitor

          goals, the it is only a matter of time before they offer aid to the Imperium.

      2. Rumors abound that one of the Primarchs will return, though which one is truly anyone's guess.
          Roboute Guilliman has recently been mentioned, obviously awakening from stasis fully healed
          after 10,000 years. Personally, I feel it is more appropriate given the previous narrative arch
          surrounding the Space Wolves that Leman Russ return from the Eye of Terror. With all the
          hubbub going on around it, Russ would have a valid reason to follow the 13th Crusade back
          out into realspace. For purely selfish reasons I'd prefer Rogal Dorn's return because I'm an
          Imperial Fists fan and a skeleton hand revered on the Phalanx isn't enough for me to believe he
          is dead.
